ISTANBUL, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Turkish police confiscated 1.5 tons of skunk, a highly potent form of cannabis, in a major drug raid on Friday at a port in the country's northwest, authorities said.
Five suspects were detained in the operation at the Derince Port in the province of Kocaeli, which was carried out under the coordination of anti-narcotics departments and multiple police units, said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya in a statement.
Yerlikaya noted that the operation prevented the distribution of the narcotics and safeguarded the public, particularly the young people.
Türkiye's strategic position as a bridge between Europe and Asia has made its ports and borders key transit points for drug trafficking routes, while authorities frequently conduct operations to disrupt illegal networks and prevent illicit substances from reaching communities. ■
