JAKARTA, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government has removed about 7.39 million pieces of online gambling content from various social media platforms between 2017 and Nov. 11, 2025, according to the Ministry of Communication and Digital on Thursday.

"Online gambling poses a serious threat to the social and economic lives of people of all ages, including students," said Muchtarul Huda, director of strategy and digital space supervision policy at the ministry.

He said the government's crackdown had achieved significant results, with the value of online gambling transactions dropping from 51 trillion rupiah (about 3.05 billion U.S. dollars) in 2024 to 24 trillion rupiah (about 1.43 billion dollars) this year.

Erika, head of data protection at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, said online gambling operators continue to register new domains, publish anonymous content, and place covert advertisements across digital platforms.

She stressed the importance of a comprehensive government policy that includes domain shutdowns, tighter control of digital advertisements, and monitoring of game links that direct users to online gambling accounts.
