KUALA LUMPUR, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's total population was estimated at 34.3 million in the third quarter as compared to 34.1 million a year ago, with a slower growth of 0.5 percent as compared to 1.6 percent, official data showed Thursday.
The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the proportion of citizens in the third quarter increased to 90.1 percent from 90 percent a year ago.
The male population increased to 18 million from 17.9 million, while the female population rose to 16.3 million from 16.2 million in the same period.
The number of live births continued to decline, recording a decrease of 7.8 percent to 95,469 births, as compared to 103,594 births a year ago.
Meanwhile, a total of 46,643 deaths were recorded in the third quarter, decreasing 5.6 percent year-on-year. ■
