SEOUL, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export of information and communications technology (ICT) products logged a double-digit growth in October due to strong semiconductor demand, government data showed Thursday.
Shipment of ICT products jumped 12.2 percent from a year earlier to 23.33 billion U.S. dollars in October, keeping an upward trend since February, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
The double-digit gain was attributed to surging chip demand that offset uncertainty in the global trade environment.
Chip export spiked 25.4 percent to 15.74 billion dollars on robust demand for high-end products, such as double data rate 5 (DDR5) and high bandwidth memory (HBM) used in generative artificial intelligence (AI) chipsets.
Display panel shipment declined 8.8 percent to 1.64 billion dollars, and mobile phone export dropped 11.8 percent to 1.61 billion dollars.
Shipment for computers and peripherals reduced 1.0 percent to 1.11 billion dollars, but communications equipment export climbed 2.5 percent to 180 million dollars.
Import for ICT products fell 2.9 percent over the year to 12.96 billion dollars in October, sending the trade surplus in the ICT industry to 10.37 billion dollars.
Import for mobile phones and display panels posted a double-digit decline, but those for computers and peripherals surged in triple digits last month. ■
