BERLIN, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- German politician Sahra Wagenknecht on Monday announced her stepping down as leader of the political party that bears her name, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).
This is a young political force founded in early 2024 after Wagenknecht broke away from the Left party (Die Linke). The party's new leadership will be formed by the current co-chair, Amira Mohamed Ali, and Member of the European Parliament Fabio De Masi.
Wagenknecht will instead lead a new commission on fundamental values within the party.
The 56-year-old politician's decision came amid the party's efforts to rebrand to attract more supporters.
Besides the leadership reshuffle, the party is also considering changing its name, a decision to be made later this year at a party conference.
The BSW narrowly missed the five-percent threshold to enter the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, during the elections earlier this year. It is currently demanding a recount of the votes. ■
