MANILA, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Tuesday that it has launched the Philippines Flyway Project to boost the conservation of vital wetland ecosystems that protect migratory bird habitats and support local livelihoods.
The initiative aims to protect and sustainably manage Philippine wetlands that serve as key stopovers for migratory birds traveling along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, while enhancing biodiversity, supporting sustainable livelihoods, and strengthening climate resilience for millions of Filipinos, the ADB said in a press release.
The project focuses on three priority wetlands -- Candaba on Luzon, and Lake Mainit and Sibugay Wetlands in Mindanao, according to the ADB.
More than 20 migratory waterbird species depend on wetlands in the Philippines as key stopover and wintering sites, the ADB added. ■
