MELBOURNE, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- A woman and a child drowned after falling into a creek in Melbourne's southeast suburbs on Monday afternoon.

Police in the state of Victoria said in a statement that a witness reported that two people had been swept away after falling into the creek in Dandenong, 30 kilometers southeast of central Melbourne, on Monday.

A search located the pair, believed to be a 33-year-old woman and a 7-year-old boy, unconscious in the water, but they could not be revived and were declared deceased at the scene.

Victoria Police said the woman was believed to be going to the aid of the child when she also got into difficulty.

Greater Dandenong Mayor Jim Memeti said in a statement quoted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the incident was an awful tragedy.
