ST. PETERSBURG, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- The General Motors (GM) automobile plant in St. Petersburg, which halted operations in 2015, will resume full-cycle car production in 2026, Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said Friday.
The former GM plant located in St. Petersburg has now been re-equipped from scratch, and full-cycle automobile production will be launched starting next year, Manturov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He noted that talks with investors regarding production sites in St. Petersburg's Shushary district and in Nizhny Novgorod city are nearing completion.
The plant was opened in 2008 and produced several popular Chevrolet and Opel models when those brands were part of the GM group. In 2015, GM decided to halt operations in Russia and mothballed the facility.
In 2020, the plant was acquired by Hyundai's Russian subsidiary, which later sold its industrial assets, including the main Hyundai plant in St. Petersburg and the former GM facility, to Art Finance, the parent company of AGR Automobile Plant, in early 2024. ■
