XI'AN, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- Yang Fasen, formerly a senior official of northwest China's Qinghai Province, was on Wednesday sentenced to life in prison for accepting bribes. His sentence was handed down by the Hanzhong Intermediate People's Court in Shaanxi Province.
Yang, who is a former member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Qinghai Provincial Committee and secretary of the commission for political and legal affairs of the CPC Qinghai Provincial Committee, has also been deprived of his political rights for the rest of his life.
All of his personal property will be confiscated, and his illegal gains must be turned over to the state treasury, per the court verdict.
From 2005 to 2024, Yang took advantage of his various positions in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Qinghai to assist certain enterprises and individuals in matters such as project contracting and business operations. In exchange, he illegally accepted money and valuables worth over 147 million yuan (about 21 million U.S. dollars), the court said.
Given that Yang had turned himself in and confessed to most of his bribery offenses that had not yet been uncovered by investigating authorities, he was granted a lenient sentence, according to the verdict. ■
