BEIJING, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.22 percent to 3,922.41 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.22 percent higher at 13,025.45 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 1.64 trillion yuan (about 231.25 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.67 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to coal, energy and metal led the gains, while those related to engineering machinery, oil and gas suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.09 percent to close at 3,062.16 points. ■
