Cameroon's Constitutional Council on Wednesday dismissed eight petitions filed by opposition parties, civil society groups, and other election stakeholders seeking the complete or partial annulment of the Oct. 12 presidential election over alleged irregularities.
YAOUNDE, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Cameroon's Constitutional Council on Wednesday dismissed eight petitions filed by opposition parties, civil society groups, and other election stakeholders seeking the complete or partial annulment of the Oct. 12 presidential election over alleged irregularities.
Council President Clement Atangana said during hours-long hearings that while some petitions were "admissible in form," their arguments were "not justified," while others were deemed "inadmissible."
A total of 11 petitions were initially filed, but three candidates later withdrew their complaints, leaving eight cases for consideration.
The council's ruling clears the way for the proclamation of the final election results, which, under the Electoral Code, must be announced on or before Oct. 27. ■
