KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's new car sales fell 3 percent year-on-year to 579,336 units in the January to September period of 2025.

The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) said in a statement on Tuesday that new car sales slipped 0.2 percent year-on-year to 58,490 units in September.

The lower total industry volume (TIV) is attributed to fewer working days in September due to a number of public holidays and a "wait-and-see" attitude towards the 2026 National Budget announcement, including details on petrol subsidy rationalization.

According to MAA, sales in October are expected to be better than in September, as the National Budget announcement, including no extension for completely built-up battery electric vehicles (BEVs) tax exemption, is expected to drive demand for BEVs until the end of the year, along with year-end promotion campaigns.
