SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's foreign ministry said Tuesday that it will continue cooperation with Japan under Tokyo's newly elected prime minister.

Seoul's foreign ministry said in a statement that the government will closely communicate with Japan's new Cabinet and continue cooperation to maintain the positive momentum in relations between the two countries.

Japan's parliament elected Sanae Takaichi of the Liberal Democratic Party as the country's first female prime minister earlier in the day.

The Seoul ministry hoped that the two countries will continue to work together to develop future-oriented relations, given that the two sides are neighboring countries and global partners with similar positions in the rapidly changing geopolitical environment and trade order.
