ADDIS ABABA, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia's Council of Ministers, the country's executive body, on Tuesday approved a regulation to establish the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission.

The Council of Ministers said in a statement that the regulation mandated the newly-formed commission with the task of leading and coordinating the East African country's efforts "in the peaceful use of nuclear technology in accordance with international frameworks."

It highlighted the vital importance of advancing the application of nuclear technology to power the country's development ambitions, mainly in areas related to access to electric energy, industrial development, healthcare, as well as science and research.

"After extensive discussion on the matter, the Council of Ministers unanimously decided that the regulation will take effect upon its official publication," the statement added.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed Sandokan Debebe as chief commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission. Debebe previously served as chief of staff at the Office of the Prime Minister.
