Sri Lanka seizes 13 mln USD assets from organized criminals from 2021 to 2024

COLOMBO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka Police have confiscated assets worth 3.9 billion rupees (about 13 million U.S. dollars) belonging to organized criminals between 2021 and 2024, a police spokesman said on Tuesday.

Police spokesman F. U. Wootler told reporters here that assets worth 730 million rupees (about 2.4 million dollars) have been seized so far in 2025.

He said that assets confiscated between 2021 and 2023 included 354 gold sovereigns, 72 vehicles, 35 houses, 37 acres of land, and 670 million rupees (about 2.4 million dollars) in cash.

Wootler added that Sri Lankan authorities have intensified efforts to apprehend criminals hiding abroad by working closely with foreign law enforcement agencies.

He said that six suspects, including one of the main individuals wanted in connection with the assassination of an organized crime leader inside a courthouse, were recently arrested in Nepal.
