SINGAPORE, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- More than 80 percent of Singapore residents reported encountering harmful online content in the past year, according to surveys recently released by the Ministry of Digital Development and Information.

The most frequent types of harmful online content cited by respondents included material supporting illegal activity, such as scams, content of a sexual or violent nature, cyberbullying, and material that could cause racial or religious tension, the ministry said.

One in three respondents also reported experiencing harmful online behavior. Catfishing was the most common, followed by unwanted sexual messages and online harassment.

More than 60 percent of those surveyed called for stronger regulation to protect Singaporeans from online harms, according to the surveys conducted with thousands of citizens and permanent residents aged 15 years and older.
