COLOMBO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Social media use in Sri Lanka continued to grow steadily in 2024, with notable increases in users across major platforms, according to the latest report by the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL).
The report, covering the period from March to December 2024, showed that Facebook remained the most popular platform in the country, with the number of users rising from 14.5 million in March to 15 million by December.
YouTube also recorded an increase in users, growing from 14 million to 14.5 million during the same period, the report said.
TikTok saw the sharpest growth, with users rising from 9.4 million in March to 10.5 million by December, an increase of over one million users within nine months.
Instagram use also climbed from 8 million to 8.5 million during the period under review.
However, the TRCSL noted a slight decrease in WhatsApp users, marking the only major platform to record a dip in activity.
According to the commission, the overall trend reflects the continued expansion of Sri Lanka's digital landscape and the growing integration of social media platforms into daily life across various age groups. ■
