ISLAMABAD, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reaffirmed his government's resolve to strengthen national preparedness against natural disasters and the impacts of climate change, as the country marked National Resilience Day.

The day marks the anniversary of the 2005 earthquake that caused massive loss of life and property, while also serving as a reminder of the unity and courage displayed by the nation in its aftermath, Sharif said in a message.

He noted that the solidarity and determination shown during that tragedy remain a proud legacy for future generations.

"Similar resilience was once again evident this year when heavy monsoon rains and floods inflicted severe damage to homes, crops, livestock and infrastructure," he said.

Sharif stressed that Pakistan, among the countries most affected by climate change, must adopt comprehensive policies, strengthen early warning systems and harness modern technology to reduce losses from extreme weather events such as floods, earthquakes and heatwaves.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensure preparedness, reduce vulnerabilities, and protect the economy and lives from the adverse impacts of climate change.
