In October 1949, the People's Republic of China was founded. Thousands of miles away, in New York's Times Square, the stirring notes of "March of the Volunteers" rang out. The man who played the song was Israel Epstein, a Polish-born Jewish journalist who grew up in China and devoted his career to exposing the atrocities committed by Japanese invaders during World War II.
