GENEVA, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Global Governance Initiative proposed by China at the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) comes at the right time and will guide the world toward a fairer and more brilliant future, David Fernandez Puyana, Permanent Observer of the University for Peace (UPEACE) to the UN Office in Geneva, has said.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, Puyana noted that the current world order is facing numerous challenges, especially in the field of peace and security, where wars and conflicts continue to erupt. The UN, he stressed, remains the most suitable platform to address these challenges.

Puyana said China's recent proposal of the Global Governance Initiative is a voice grounded in the UN Charter, as it reaffirms and supports the basic principles underpinning the international order established in 1945 - cooperation, dialogue, respect for state sovereignty, and a framework based on international law. He noted that the initiative "is needed and necessary to have a more brilliant future."

According to Puyana, the initiative adopts a medium- and long-term perspective, offering solutions to global challenges that remain unresolved and promoting the building of a fairer system of global governance. At the same time, it highlights the importance of economic development and trade cooperation, where the World Trade Organization, long supported by China, is playing a constructive role.

He emphasized that the Global Governance Initiative is closely aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in fostering partnerships. Borders, he said, should no longer be regarded as absolute barriers. Humanity needs a broader global vision, and the initiative "is really an important step forward in that direction." He added that today's world requires more cosmopolitan mindsets and greater exchange among peoples.

Puyana further pointed out that China's proposed Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiative complement one another and are of great value. These initiatives, he stressed, are highly consistent with the UN's core concepts and programs.

The openness, cooperation, dialogue, and fruitful exchanges with other civilizations that China advocates form the very foundation for building a more peaceful and fairer world, he added. More importantly, he emphasized, "China, in that sense, is not only proposing -- it's also a doer. It's very action-oriented in that field."

Founded in 1980 at the initiative of the Costa Rican government and through a resolution of the UN General Assembly, the UPEACE is headquartered in San Jose, Costa Rica. Its mission is to promote peace education worldwide.
