MADRID, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Athletic Club president Jon Uriarte announced on Thursday that he would stand for re-election at the end of the season.
The 47-year-old was elected by the club's members in June 2022, winning 47 percent of the votes - considerably more than either of the two other candidates.
His first three seasons in charge have been a success, with Athletic finishing eighth in La Liga in the 2022-23 campaign, before finishing fifth the following season as well as winning the Copa del Rey for the first time in 40 years.
Last season saw Athletic finish fourth in La Liga to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 11 years, while also reaching the semifinals of the Europa League.
But with a long injury list this season, the club had six games without a win last month after starting the campaign with three consecutive wins.
"Election years are difficult, because there is a lot of information that can give a feeling of uncertainty. I want to give that stability to the club," said Uriarte as he announced his decision. ■
