ISTANBUL, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were injured as an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 jolted the Sea of Marmara in northwestern Türkiye on Thursday, local authorities said.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority reported that the quake occurred at 2:55 p.m. local time (1155 GMT) and was centered off the coast of Marmaraereglisi in Tekirdag province.
The tremor was also felt in Istanbul, Bursa, and Canakkale provinces, sending people rushing into the streets.
The Istanbul Governor's Office said in a statement that 17 people sustained injuries amid widespread panic in the city as residents evacuated buildings, and "12 citizens have contacted emergency services reporting panic attacks and fear, while five others have reported sprains related to panic."
The office has also received damage reports for four buildings. Noting that teams have been dispatched to the reported locations, it urged citizens to avoid potentially damaged structures and follow official announcements.
The Tekirdag Governor's Office said response teams immediately launched field inspections, and no adverse reports have been received by the Emergency Call Center.
The GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.2 and later revised it to 5.0, while Türkiye's Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute reported it at a magnitude of 5.3. ■
