BRUSSELS, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- "China's Global Governance Initiative (GGI) is injecting new momentum into multilateral cooperation and South-South collaboration," former United Nations Under-Secretary-General Erik Solheim has said.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, Solheim said that the GGI marks a decisive step toward modernizing the system of international cooperation, adding that the initiative advocates true multilateralism, based on sovereign equality, respect for international law and broad-based consultation -- moving beyond an era dominated by a handful of Western powers.

Amid rising geopolitical uncertainty, he stressed that China's initiative points the way toward inclusivity, partnership and practical problem-solving. By targeting fundamental needs, it restores confidence that global institutions can be fair, responsive and capable of meeting today's complex challenges.

"What makes the initiative truly significant is its practical focus on translating high ideals into real-world improvements," said Solheim, who currently serves as president of the Europe-Asia Center.

The world order is undergoing a profound transformation, Solheim said, stressing that the old system can no longer address new challenges. "True leadership is not about tearing down the house, but about renovating and improving it so that it better fits the multipolar reality of today's world and responds effectively to people's needs."

"Through technical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, we can reduce frictions and build trust," Solheim noted, calling for stronger city partnerships, deeper research collaboration and more exchanges among the Global South, especially in clean energy, environmental protection and climate adaptation.

The GGI, together with other China-proposed initiatives, offers a clear framework for international cooperation in the new era, he said.

"By fostering dialogue, development and collaboration, China's GGI is helping the Global South speak with a stronger voice in international affairs and contribute to building a fairer, more inclusive and sustainable world order."
