WELLINGTON, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's offshore investment reached 422.6 billion NZ dollars (244.8 billion U.S. dollars) in the year ended March 31, 2025, with nearly 71 percent held in the United States, Australia, Britain, and Japan, Stats NZ reported Tuesday.
Most were held as portfolio investments, with smaller shares in direct investment, financial derivatives, and reserve assets, according to a statement from the statistics department.
The country's foreign-currency external debt stood at 157.8 billion NZ dollars (91.4 billion U.S. dollars), with 95 percent hedged against currency risk, it said.
As of March 31, 2025, overseas investors held 633.8 billion NZ dollars (367 billion U.S. dollars) in New Zealand assets, it said, adding more than 58 percent of foreign investment came from Australia, the United States, Britain, and Singapore.
Direct investment accounted for just over a quarter of total foreign inflows, while more than half was in portfolio holdings, Stats NZ said. ■
