BEIJING, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.52 percent to 3,882.78 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.35 percent higher at 13,526.51 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 2.18 trillion yuan (about 306.8 billion U.S. dollars), up from 2.16 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to energy metals and storage chips led the gains, while stocks related to banking and insurance sectors suffered major losses.
Data showed that Chinese shares posted strong performance in the first three quarters of this year, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rising 15.84 percent during the period.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, closed flat at 3,238.16 points on Tuesday. ■
