MADRID, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona on Monday announced that midfielder Marc Bernal has signed a new contract to keep him at the club until the end of June 2029.

The new deal is a reward for the 18-year-old who impressed in the first three games of the 2024-25 season before breaking the cruciate ligament in his knee playing away to Rayo Vallecano.

The injury cost Bernal almost a year to recover form, but he has made two appearances this season and looks likely to play an important role this season.

"It's a very special day for me, and I'd say the happiest day of my life. I hope for many more years at the club," said Bernal to the club website after signing his contract.

He explained talks had begun over the deal when he was struggling to return to fitness and the confidence shown in him helped boost his morale.

"I was at rock bottom, and it was a huge help to feel that confidence. It was very special for me and meant a lot to me and my family."

"It's been a very tough year," he said, discussing his injury. "The worst part is at the beginning, when you can't get out of bed for the first month. You appreciate things you didn't realize before, but everyone made it easier for me. My teammates, coaches, family," added Bernal.
