KABUL, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- A water canal to irrigate more than 630 hectares of land has been constructed and inaugurated in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province recently, a spokesman for the provincial Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, Mohammad Hanif Haqmal, said Monday.
Constructed at a cost of 291,000 U.S. dollars in Miwand district, the 5.1 km long water canal, which was formally inaugurated a couple of days ago, in addition to bringing underwater more than 630 hectares of land, would also provide drinking water to 2,033 families, the official further said.
Previously, the Afghan authorities started construction of two water supply projects in the northern Samangan province to benefit 350 families a week ago.
By launching projects to manage water resources, the Afghan government aims to address water scarcity while also creating job opportunities for its people. ■
