BERLIN/RIGA, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Latvia and German defense giant Rheinmetall have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an artillery ammunition plant in the Baltic nation, the company said Thursday.
Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with operations expected to start a year later, according to Rheinmetall.
Latvia's Ministry of Economics confirmed the project, noting that a joint venture will oversee the plant's construction. The ministry said the project will deepen the country's integration into the European Union's defense sector.
The 275-million-euro (321.7 million U.S. dollars) project will produce 155-millimeter artillery shells.
At the end of 2024, Rheinmetall was commissioned to build a similar facility in neighboring Lithuania. (1 euro = 1.17 U.S. dollar) ■
