At least 55 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza Strip: sources
At least 55 Palestinians were killed across the Gaza Strip on Wednesday due to Israeli attacks, according to official and local Palestinian sources.
Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson for Gaza's Civil Defense, told Xinhua that 22 people, including children and women, were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting warehouses belonging to the Gaza Municipality, which housed dozens of displaced families in eastern Gaza City.
Basal added that Civil Defense teams are still working to recover victims from under the rubble.
"A massive explosion occurred in the early hours of the morning, killing and wounding a large number of people instantly. Several bodies remain under the rubble," said local eyewitness Anwar Ershi.
There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military on the airstrike.
Drone attack by paramilitary forces kills 15 at market in western Sudan
At least 15 civilians were killed and 12 others injured on Tuesday in a drone strike launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that targeted a local market in the city of El Fasher, western Sudan, according to a medical source and a volunteer group.
"The Saudi Hospital in El Fasher received multiple casualties. Based on our count, 15 people were killed and 12 others were injured," a medical source at the city's main hospital told Xinhua on Wednesday.
The source, who asked to remain anonymous, added, "Most of the injured are in critical condition and require surgical intervention. The situation is dire due to a severe shortage of medical supplies and specialized staff."
Meanwhile, the Coordination of Resistance Committees in El Fasher, a volunteer group, reported a drone strike by the RSF targeted a busy local market in the city on Tuesday, leaving more than 27 people dead or injured.
Since May 10, 2024, violent clashes have been ongoing in El Fasher between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and their allies on one side, and the RSF on the other, with the fighting intensifying in recent days.
Sudan remains gripped by a conflict between the SAF and the RSF, which erupted in April 2023. The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, both internally and across borders, deepening the country's humanitarian crisis.

Peter Mutharika wins Malawi's presidential election
Malawi's former President Peter Mutharika has won the presidential election with 56.8 percent of the vote, securing a decisive lead over incumbent Lazarus Chakwera, the country's electoral commission announced Wednesday.
The president-elect, contesting on the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) ticket, secured nearly 3.04 million votes in the 17-candidate race on Sept. 16, while Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) garnered around 1.77 million votes, Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja announced at a press briefing in Lilongwe, the capital.
The 85-year-old Mutharika obtained 56.8 percent of the valid votes cast, surpassing the 50-percent-plus-one threshold required for an outright victory, while Chakwera, 70, trailed with 33 percent of ballots, according to the MEC.
Mutharika, who served as president from 2014 to 2020, will return to office with former MEC Chairperson Jane Ansah as his vice president.
Xi announces China's 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions to beef up climate response
Chinese President Xi Jinping delivered video remarks to the United Nations Climate Summit held in New York on Wednesday local time.
Noting that this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, a pivotal year for countries to submit their new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), and global climate governance is entering a key stage, he made the following three proposals.
First, Xi said it is important to firm up confidence. "Green and low-carbon transition is the trend of the time. While some country is acting against it, the international community should stay focused on the right direction, remain unwavering in confidence, unremitting in actions and unrelenting in intensity, and push for formulation and delivery on NDCs, with a view to providing more positive energy to the cooperation on global climate governance," he said.
Second, Xi called for living up to responsibilities. "Fairness and equity should be upheld and the right to development of developing countries fully respected," he said. The global green transition should serve to narrow rather than widen the North-South gap. Countries need to honor the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities, whereby developed countries should take the lead in fulfilling emission reduction obligations and provide more financial and technological support to developing countries, he added.
Third, Xi stressed the importance of deepening cooperation, adding that international coordination in green technologies and industries should be strengthened to address the shortfall in green production capacity and ensure free flow of quality green products globally, so that the benefits of green development can reach all corners of the world.
Over 2 million relocated as China battles super typhoon Ragasa
More than 2.16 million local residents had been relocated in south China's Guangdong Province as of 4 p.m. on Wednesday in response to Typhoon Ragasa, which made landfall in the province at about 5 p.m.
Typhoon Ragasa, the 18th typhoon of this year, with maximum wind force near its center reaching 40 meters per second, churned ashore at Hailing Island in the city of Yangjiang in Guangdong, according to the provincial meteorological observatory.
Ragasa, the most powerful typhoon to hit China this year as forecasted by meteorologists, is moving westward at speeds of 20 to 25 kilometers per hour and its intensity is gradually weakening, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
China's national observatory on Wednesday renewed an orange alert -- the second-highest alert level in its four-tier weather warning system -- for Typhoon Ragasa.
