WASHINGTON, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump's approval rating has slipped in recent weeks as Americans expressed concern over the U.S. economy and the administration's ability to rein in rising prices, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday.

The three-day poll, which closed on Sunday, showed 41 percent of respondents approved of Trump's performance as president, down from 42 percent in a previous poll earlier this month.

Only 35 percent of poll respondents approved of Trump's handling of the economy, and 28 percent approved of his handling of the cost of living, with both readings slightly lower than in previous polls.

Some 54 percent of respondents said the national economy was on the wrong track, up from 53 percent in an August poll and 52 percent in July.

One of the key promises of Trump's presidential campaign was to lower prices and revive the economy; however, the economy has been slowing, and inflation remains elevated in some sectors amid broad tariffs and stringent immigration policies.

The labor market has shown signs of softening in recent months, prompting the Federal Reserve to cut the benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points last week.

U.S. nonfarm payrolls increased by just 22,000 in August, marking a sharp slowdown from a revised July increase of 79,000, according to the U.S. Labor Department. The unemployment rate in August jumped to 4.3 percent, a nearly four-year high.
