COLOMBO, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka is expecting a record salt harvest given the dry weather in previous months, the Department of Government Information said on Friday.
The department said salt harvesting in the Puttalam district, which contributes close to 60 percent of the country's annual salt production, has begun.
It said Sri Lanka's total salt requirement is about 180,000 metric tons a year for food and other products and that the salt production cycle takes roughly seven months. The country had to import salt in recent months because of heavy rains in 2024, which disrupted salt production.
However, favorable dry weather this season is likely to yield a record harvest, the department said. ■
