SYDNEY, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Police in the Australian state of New South Wales (NSW) said on Friday evening that a body had been recovered after a search and rescue operation following a plane crash in the state's south on Thursday.

The body, believed to be a 60-year-old man, was located at the crash site, and the operation had concluded. The man is yet to be formally identified, the police added.

An investigation into the cause of the crash will be undertaken by the Australian Transport Bureau.

The search and rescue operation was launched on Thursday when emergency services were called to Budawang National Park, about 200 km southwest of Sydney, following reports an aircraft Emergency Location Transmitter had activated.

The operation resumed on Friday after crews were unable to reach the wreckage on Thursday due to terrain and weather conditions.

Police said in a statement earlier on Friday that a small recreational aircraft had departed Bankstown in Sydney's southwest suburbs earlier on Thursday with a single occupant and was in the process of returning to the airport when it crashed.
