WELLINGTON, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's economy contracted 0.9 percent in the June 2025 quarter, reversing a 0.9 percent rise in the previous quarter, the statistics department Stats NZ reported Thursday.

The decline in economic activity was broad-based, with falls in 10 out of 16 industries, led by manufacturing and construction.

"GDP (gross domestic product) has now fallen in 3 of the last 5 quarters," said Stats NZ economic growth spokesperson Jason Attewell.

Goods-producing industries fell 2.3 percent, driven by a 3.5 percent contraction in manufacturing, where transport equipment, machinery, and equipment manufacturing slumped 6.2 percent, statistics show.

Food, beverage, and tobacco manufacturing declined 2.2 percent, reflected in lower export volumes for products such as meat, Stats NZ said.

Construction activity dropped 1.8 percent in the June 2025 quarter, following a 1.2 percent increase in the March 2025 quarter, as both the value of building work and employment in the sector fell, it said.

Primary industries fell 0.7 percent, while service industries showed little change over the second quarter, it said, adding rental, hiring, and real estate services provided the only significant boost to GDP, rising 0.7 percent.

On a per capita basis, GDP fell 1.1 percent during the June 2025 quarter, it said.

The expenditure measure of GDP also declined 0.9 percent, with exports down 1.2 percent amid weaker dairy, meat, and other food and beverage shipments, Stats NZ said.

However, household consumption rose 0.4 percent, supported by increased spending on consumer electronics such as televisions, computers, and telecommunication equipment, it said.
