MANILA, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Philippine House of Representatives on Wednesday elected Deputy Speaker Faustino Dy as its new speaker, following the resignation of Martin Romualdez over a corruption scandal involving infrastructure projects.
Romualdez said he stepped down to allow an independent commission to investigate alleged misuse of government funds in flood control projects without "doubt or interference." He and several lawmakers were linked to the multibillion-peso scandal.
The leadership change came days after the senate replaced Francis Escudero with Vicente Sotto as president. ■
