TOKYO, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Japan's Tokyo stocks fell on Wednesday, snapping a five-day winning streak as investors locked in profits on major stocks.

The benchmark Nikkei stock index, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average, finished at 44,790.38, down 111.89 points, or 0.25 percent, from the previous close.

Selling pressure was fueled by overnight declines in U.S. equities and a stronger yen, which weighed on exporters. Investors trimmed positions in recently surging AI-related names such as SoftBank Group and Advantest.

The broader Topix index also declined for the first time in five sessions, down 22.53 points, or 0.71 percent, to 3,145.83.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market, decliners outnumbered gainers 1,267 to 312, with 40 stocks flat.
