NEW DELHI, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- At least four people died and several others went missing in India's northern hilly state of Uttarakhand after cloudbursts struck late on Monday night, a local official said on Tuesday.
Several hotels, shops, bridges, houses, roads, and cars were swept away in and around the state's capital city Dehradun, as a strong current of muddy waters flushed through the affected areas, entering houses and commercial establishments.
Heavy rains occurred in many parts of Uttarakhand, particularly in and around Dehradun.
Uttarakhand's Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman told media that it had rained heavily over the past 12 hours, thus rendering heavy damage in many parts.
According to him, rescue work was being done at all places. ■
