TOKYO, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- New Zealand's Geordie Beamish delivered a dramatic upset in the men's 3,000m steeplechase final at the World Athletics Championships on Monday, outsprinting Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali in the final strides to secure his first global title.

Beamish, 28, clocked 8:33.88, edging out two-time Olympic champion and two-time world champion El Bakkali by a mere 0.07 seconds. El Bakkali settled for silver, while Kenya's Edmund Serem claimed bronze with a time of 8:34.56.

Beamish's victory, achieved in a thrilling finish at Tokyo's National Stadium, marked New Zealand's first medal at the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which run until September 21.
