KUALA LUMPUR, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- X-FAB, a Germany-based mixed-signal and specialty semiconductor manufacturer, announced Friday a 600 million U.S. dollar expansion of its manufacturing facility in Malaysia's northern Borneo state of Sarawak.
The firm said in a statement that the project added 6,000 square meters of cleanroom space and was completed in just two years, and the site's monthly wafer start capacity has increased from 30,000 units to 40,000 units.
"This expansion is a strategic step forward -- ensuring that our capacity keeps pace with growing global demand whilst positioning us to capture new opportunities," said Rudi De Winter, chief executive officer of X-FAB Group.
Malaysian Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the expansion reflects investor confidence in Malaysia's long-term industrial reforms and supports the country's ambition to become a hub for advanced manufacturing.
According to the statement, the new manufacturing line is now operational and will serve X-FAB's global customer base across the automotive, industrial, and medical sectors. ■
