JUBA, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- South Sudan's Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation on Tuesday signed an agreement with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to implement a 9.98 million U.S. dollar flood mitigation and water infrastructure project.

The one-year program, part of the World Bank-financed Regional Climate Resilience Program for Eastern and Southern Africa, will benefit flood-affected and water-stressed communities in Eastern Equatoria, Jonglei, Lakes, and Upper Nile states. Planned activities include rehabilitating dikes and drainage systems, restoring hand pumps and water yards, distributing fishing nets, and creating short-term local jobs.

Under the agreement, the UNOPS will oversee technical assessments, procurement, construction, and community engagement, while ensuring environmental and social safeguards.

Achier Manyuat John, undersecretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, reaffirmed the government's commitment to transparency and accountability.

Petronella Halwiindi, UNOPS country manager in South Sudan, said the project would deliver sustainable infrastructure to protect communities and enhance climate resilience.
