LONDON, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Nottingham Forest has dismissed head coach Nuno Espirito Santo after 21 months in charge, just three games into the new season.

Nuno's future had been in doubt for weeks after he acknowledged a breakdown in his relationship with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Talks over his successor are already underway, with former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou among the candidates.

In a statement released shortly after midnight, Forest thanked Nuno "for his contribution during a very successful era at the City Ground" and said he would "always hold a special place" in the club's history.

The 51-year-old was appointed in December 2023 after Steve Cooper's dismissal. He secured Forest's Premier League survival that season, then guided the club to a seventh-place finish last term - its highest league position since 1994-95 and first European qualification in 30 years. His success earned him a new three-year deal in June.

Forest went into the September international break on the back of a 3-0 home defeat to West Ham and sits 10th in the Premier League.
