BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's national observatory on Sunday renewed a yellow alert -- the third-highest level in its four-tier weather warning system -- for Typhoon Tapah, the 16th typhoon of the year.

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) has forecasted that the typhoon will move northwest at around 20 km per hour, and it is expected to make landfall on the coast of Guangdong Province in the early hours of Monday or later that morning.

Typhoon Tapah is likely to bring strong winds to the northern areas of the South China Sea and some coastal areas of Guangdong, and parts of Guangdong and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will experience heavy rains, according to the NMC.

China's Ministry of Water Resources on Sunday activated a Level-IV emergency flood control response in Guangdong and Guangxi, urging the close monitoring of rainfall, flood conditions and the typhoon's path, and for the safe operations of reservoirs and ongoing projects to be ensured.
