KATHMANDU, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Nepali government has decided to shut down social media platforms not registered with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, a government official said on Thursday.

The ministry has directed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority to stop the operation of the platforms that have refused to register within its latest seven-day deadline, said Gajendra Kumar Thakur, spokesperson for the ministry.

"We have to start the action as they defied our call for registration; now the authority will start shutting down the unregistered platforms," Thakur told Xinhua.

Despite repeated calls from Nepal, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, WeTalk and Poppo Live have registered with the ministry, and the government set a seven-day deadline again on Aug. 27.
