BARSKOON, Kyrgyzstan, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- A groundbreaking ceremony was held here in eastern Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul region for the construction of the Barskoon-Bedel highway, which will link the country to the Bedel checkpoint on the Chinese border.

Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov said Wednesday at the ceremony that the highway will strengthen Kyrgyzstan's external ties, boost the economy and tourism, and create new opportunities in transport and logistics.

Chinese Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Liu Jiangping said he hoped the Chinese contractor would complete the project on time, calling it a new model of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

The 150 kilometer-long highway is scheduled for completion in 2030. Once operational, it is expected to enhance connectivity and facilitate trade between Kyrgyzstan and China.
