HELSINKI, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Two German students have been awarded the 2025 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for developing a flood warning system for small rivers. The award ceremony was held Tuesday evening during the ongoing World Water Week forum in Stockholm.
According to a press release published on the forum's website Wednesday, floods are becoming more frequent and severe worldwide, while many small rivers still lack real-time monitoring data, making effective early warning difficult.
After four years of work, Niklas Ruf and Jana Spiller from Germany created a sensor network linked to a mobile application that provides real-time alerts to both experts and the public. With the support of several partners, the system has already been put into use in their local community.
Launched in 1990 by the Stockholm International Water Institute, World Water Week is held annually and is regarded as a leading global platform on water use and research.
The Stockholm Junior Water Prize, open to students aged 15 to 20 worldwide, aims to encourage youth to engage in water and environmental protection and to promote innovation in sustainable water use.
This year's World Water Week runs from Aug. 24 to 28 under the theme "Water for Climate Action." ■
