JERUSALEM, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Air raid sirens sounded on Thursday in southern Israel near the Gaza Strip after a drone launched from Yemen entered Israeli airspace, the Israeli military said.
Air defense systems were activated and intercepted the drone, the military added.
No human casualties or material damage have been reported.
There was no immediate comment from Yemen's Houthi group regarding the incident.
The drone launch came a day after Houthis fired a missile targeting central Israel's Ben Gurion Airport, which the Israeli military said was intercepted.
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have carried out drone and missile attacks on Israel since November 2023 in what they describe as solidarity with Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. Most of the projectiles have been intercepted by Israeli defenses.
Israel has responded with strikes on Houthi-held areas, targeting airports, power stations, and ports in Yemen's capital Sanaa and the city of Hodeidah.
On Sunday afternoon, Israeli warplanes launched airstrikes targeting fuel and power stations, the presidential palace complex, and other civilian facilities in Sanaa, killing 10 people and injuring at least 92 others, according to the Houthi-run health ministry. ■
