ISLAMABAD, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday formally launched the country's New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30, describing it as a milestone step toward clean transport, climate resilience, and youth empowerment.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Sharif said the new policy represents a national commitment to reducing emissions, promoting clean technology, and shifting to sustainable transport solutions.

Sharif said Pakistan is among the countries hardest hit by climate change despite its negligible emissions, recalling the 2022 floods and noting that over 700 people had died this year in extreme weather.

He urged Western nations to extend material support, warning that without it, Pakistan would be forced into further borrowing to cope with climate disasters.

On the occasion, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan described the NEV Policy as a blueprint for Pakistan's clean transport revolution. "We are moving beyond vehicle assembly to battery production, charging infrastructure, and advanced parts manufacturing," he said.

As part of the launch, Sharif distributed e-scooters to high-achieving students from across Pakistan to link clean energy with education and youth empowerment.
