KABUL, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Afghan Ministry of Public Health announced on Wednesday that over 42,600 individuals have completed drug addiction treatment and rejoined their families in the past six months.

Sharafat Zaman Amarkhil, spokesperson for the ministry, noted that the ministry is addressing this major social and health crisis by expanding treatment centers and launching awareness programs to support long-term recovery and societal reintegration.

Over the past two decades, during the presence of U.S. and allied troops, Afghanistan emerged as a leading global producer of heroin and opium. This period has left behind millions of drug users, posing a significant public and social challenge in the poverty-stricken country.
