BERLIN, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The German federal cabinet on Wednesday approved the establishment of a national security council, a move designed to centralize and strengthen the country's security architecture.

The new body, which will be located in the Federal Chancellery and chaired by the chancellor, aims to more effectively bring together Germany's expertise and coordinate the response to security challenges, according to a statement from the federal government.

"Security ranks high on the federal government's political agenda," German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on the social media platform X, adding that the national security council will be the interface between internal, external, economic, and digital security.

According to the federal government's statement, the council's key tasks will include processing information to create comprehensive security assessments, making political decisions, and conducting strategic planning to counter future threats.

Permanent members of the council will include the ministers of finance, foreign affairs, interior, justice, economy, and defense, among others.
