LISBON, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Renewable sources accounted for 71.4 percent of the electricity produced in mainland Portugal in July, with wind and solar together representing almost half of the national energy mix, the Portuguese Renewable Energy Association (APREN) reported on Wednesday.

According to APREN's monthly bulletin, total electricity production reached 3,935 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up 31.5 percent from the same month in 2024. Wind generation increased by 225 GWh year-on-year. In July's production mix, wind accounted for 25.2 percent, solar 20.4 percent, hydro 20.2 percent, and bioenergy 5.7 percent.

According to Lusa News Agency, Portugal registered the highest share of wind generation among the European countries analyzed in July, at 25.7 percent, ahead of Denmark (22.7 percent) and Germany (18.2 percent). Water storage in reservoirs rose by 8.8 percent compared to July last year, reaching 80 percent.

From January to July, the share of renewables in electricity generation reached 79.6 percent, placing Portugal fourth in the European ranking, behind Norway, Denmark, and Austria.

APREN CEO Pedro Amaral Jorge said, "The July results reinforce the decisive role of renewables in Portugal's energy transition, ensuring environmental, economic, and strategic benefits."

He added that consolidating this progress would require investments in grid reinforcement, storage solutions, and mechanisms to enhance the electricity system's flexibility.
