KABUL, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Two newly built water supply projects have been completed and inaugurated in western Afghanistan's Herat province, the state-run Bakhtar news agency reported Sunday.
Costing 13.4 million afghani (about 189,266 U.S. dollars), the projects are expected to provide clean drinking water to 652 families and assist farmers in irrigating hundreds of acres of farmland, according to the report.
Locals expressed hope that such developments will boost agricultural yields and reduce dependence on unpredictable seasonal rainfall.
Afghanistan has been suffering from recurring droughts for years, with major cities including the capital Kabul facing acute shortages of drinking water. ■
